"Iris has a unique and charming way of interacting
and relating to children of all ages..."
-Ann Verdame, project DREAM coordinator, New Haven Public Schools.

Iris is available to do a variety of workshops with children in grades K-5, including a one-, two-, or three-day visit, but she is always willing to tailor her program to each schools' needs. Each presentation focuses on writing, rewriting, working with an editor, sketching out the design of the book and, finally, production. Besides being an award-winning author and illustrator, Iris has long experience working with children.

Iris gives three forty-five minute presentations in a day. In a typical three-day visit, Iris starts with an overview of writing and illustration on the first day. The second day is a writing workshop, and the third day is dedicated to the art and illustration that will go into the book. To enhance school visits, she is available to conduct book sales and signings or attend an author luncheon.

During the workshops, Iris can address up to one hundred students at a time. She recommends dividing groups by grade levels because the presentations vary to target specific age groups. In each presentation, Iris uses her own books to demonstrate the process of writing and illustrating. For grades three, four and five, Iris's nonfiction books including Captain Cook's Christmas Pudding, Safely to Shore: America's Lighthouses, and Everything From a Nail to a Coffin provide an entertaining and age-appropriate presentation. Typically, Iris discusses her book Washington D.C., A Scrapbook with grades two through five, and kindergarten through second grade enjoy Five Little Pumpkins, Cecily's Christmas, and The Soup Stone.

Iris's presentations are highly interactive.  Students enjoy her impromptu artwork on an easel, including recreating and naming characters from Five Little Pumpkins. Also, she always conducts a question and answer session at the end of her talks.

For supplies, Iris requests an overhead projector and a slide
carousel, two large tables to display artwork and books, and an easel with large paper and markers to draw for the children

The fee, payable on the first day of her visit, is $1,000 for one day, $1,900 for two days, and $2,800 for three days.
